Joshua Ellis has been manufacturing at this site since the latter part of the 18th century following moving part of the business from the other side of Dewsbury to consolidate onto the one site in the 19th century. It is this historical connection, and our skilled staff, who in the main live in close proximity to the Mill, and in particular within the area of Batley Carr, that we began discussions in the boardroom as to the best way we may now serve our customers in the 21st century.

JE_batley_carr_crop_smlTo provide the best possible service we have been considering the production options to enable us to meet the new demands for our exclusive products into current and future bespoke customers, and which can be better managed from design concept to final cloth or accessory delivery.

We have looked at various business models which would provide this service, and following much thought and discussion the decision is to relocate from our large multi-story traditional mill premises into a new purpose built single story building. Production flow and quality management will be handled through integrated computerised systems aligned to modern business needs, and staff training to facilitate this has already commenced.

This is going to provide us with some challenges but it will enable us to improve our care for our planet with the installation of computer controlled monitoring to our effluent discharge, amongst other production benefits.  Our dyehouse and finishing managers are well versed in these improvements and will aid to a smooth transition when we move. In addition our loyal and skilled staff are extremely excited about this new home, and are volunteering to “muck in” as and when needed during the move.
